Sensory Holiday Gift Guide for Ages 6-11

on Dec 18, 2024

The holiday season can be a very stressful time for many. Here at Sensory Tool House, we have put together some ideas to make the holiday season a little easier for you. Are you shopping for an elementary aged child? There are some fantastic options for sensory toys and sensory tools that will keep them engaged, entertained, and help support sensory regulation this winter.

AirForts are great options for easy set-up Sensory Hideout. These hideouts can be used for regulating and resetting. They are easy to store and fast to set up. With a variety of styles to choose from, you may just find yourself hiding in one of these.

Need some support concentrating, doing homework, or releasing some energy at time that we can't run and jump? The Nice Cube is amazing for fidgeting and squeezing. This tool is perfect for elementary aged children, though their adults might find themselves "borrowing" it. Added benefit is the Nice Cube can help support fine motor development and strengthen grip. The Squishmallow Magnetic Fidget Sliders are fantastic for helping concentration. They are discreet and easy to travel with. Excellent for those older elementary students and middle school kids.

Soft lighting in the bedroom or a calming corner can support emotional regulation and help to create a safe space to reset our nervous systems. They can also help to keep the "monsters" away at night. Artificial aquariums are fantastic for visual stimulation, soft lighting, and regulation. Bonus! You don't have to feed the fish.  They come in a variety of options from Mini Fish Tanks to Tall Bubble Tubes.

Light Up Snow Globes that you get to make yourself! Not only do you get to explore your creativity, but you can focus your snow globe on your favorite subject. Plus, it lights up for added visual input and interest. Create one for yourself or as gifts. The kit comes with three glowing snow globes! Bristle Shaped Building Blocks give endless options to the imagination. They are excellent for those who are working on developing fine motor skills and balance. They lock together easily and won't knock over like traditional building blocks or even magnetic tiles. Bristle Blocks are soft and help with hand-eye coordination, dexterity, and more. Work together or with a friend to help develop language skills and more.

Whether we are listening to a story, watching a movie, sitting down to eat, or navigating a long plane ride, staying in one spot can be difficult for those of us that need some extra input to our joints and muscles. Weighted friends can be a great option for giving comfort and some deep pressure input. They can help calm the body's nervous system while keeping us company.

There are many sizes and options to choose from. Warmies can be placed in the microwave for a soothing effect. They are also filled with French lavender that can help calm the body. They are available as neck wraps and stuffed animals. Hugimals weigh more than Warmies and are excellent for older children and even adults. They weigh 4.5lbs and give excellent deep pressure. They are also adorable. The weighted heart pillows are becoming a fan favorite for pre-teens, teens, and the staff at Sensory Tool House.

When deciding what weight is best for the child you are shopping for, the best rule of thumb is to start with an animal or lap pad that is around 5% of the person's body weight. If the child you are shopping for weighs 90lbs, an animal or lap pad between 4lbs and 5lbs would be a great start. A 60lbs child would benefit from a lap pad or animal that is around 3lbs. A Warmie is a great option!
